Chapter I'm reading in my history text right now has a map showing the distribution of states in Lincoln's election in 1860 with state color coding for the 4 major candidates/parties in the election - Lincoln (Republican), Breckinridge (Democrat Southern), Douglas (Democrat Northern), and Bell (Constitutional Union). What blows me away is that the states that Lincoln won are almost exactly the ones the Dems have carried in the last two elections. The states won by the other three (primarily Democrat) are the states that Bush carried.

Interesting how the Republican and Democratic parties appeal has shifted 180 degrees demographically.
