I'm pro-nuclear and think RTGs are safe but the blasted things are heavy, expensive and create extra legal problems. I strongly support JIMO because I think nuclear-electric propulsion is an enabling technology. However I think it is too soon to be going over to RTG powered rovers on Mars.

MER has been ***WILDLY SUCCESSFUL***. Both MERs have performed on Mars far beyond our most optimistic hopes. MER is a brilliant design! Why are we even thinking about going with an alternative for Mars surface exploration when we already have such an excellent proven concept? Let's milk the MER design for all it's worth in terms of Mars science and then proceed with a larger RTG powered Mars rover.
