I'd go with crazy.
It's important to remember that this is not a synonym for "stupid," but it is not unusual for such people to put reality through such a dense filter that they do things that make no sense, but think they are accomplishing something.
At some point, we'll eventually kill them.
I have seen legitimate Iraqi soldiers wearing ski masks like terrorists, not because they want to be anonymous to commit atrocities, but because they don't want their faces on the news for the terrorists to see.
The military/police death toll for Iraq exceeds our own, although it doesn't get as much press. Yet they still sign up. Those who scoff at this, saying they're just after a good job, are spitting on their courage.
