I was thinking about jumping in with that very observation, but didn't have time to track down the all-important numbers.
I understand that there's a hardcore belief on the capitalist side that "hey, we paid for the machines that increased productivity, we own the increased profits. If the workers don't like it, fuck 'em, we'll fire 'em and hire more."
But this isn't the first episode of increased productivity in our history, by a long shot, and up until recently we've adhered to an explicit social compact: A rising tide shall lift all boats. We used to believe that fairness meant that workers and capitalists shared equally in the rewards. It helped that unions used to reinforce/enforce the compact by pushing back when capitalists got too greedy.
That's all gone now. It's a billionaire-eat-peasant world...again. We've returned to the socioeconomic regime that prevailed up until the stock market crash of 1929.
Are we having fun?
