It is said astronauts spend hundreds of hours in simulators training for all kinds of mishaps, events, etc...
The press always inflates the number of hours. I wonder how many hours exactly, for instance, Apollo astronauts trained in which simulator...It must be known somewhere; perhaps even compare it with today.
I find it interesting because in Leonov and Scott's book "Two sides of the Moon", Scott writes about the Gemini 8 problem that shortened his flight (and cancelled his spacewalk). It had never been simulated before.
When Apollo 13 had its explosion in the SM, what occured then also had never been simulated before.
And during the Shuttle era, there was in 1985 at liftoff for Challenger an ATO and for Columbia also an engine problem in 1999 (sts93). They required throwing some switches and luckily Fullerton and Collins were well trained, but for STS 51L and STS 107, no training could have saved them and it's the worse that occured.
It looks like there's a shift between training in simulators and what has the most chances to take place.
