What a horrible feeling if they had known about the breach before reentry. If they had known after reaching orbit I'm sure they would have done everything they could think of to bring them back safely. But what's the choice, staying up and running out of consumables while waiting for a rescue, or trying some off nominal entry. Either way it would have been an excruciating set of circumstances. Perhaps better not to know, if there's nothing that can be done to save them.
