So why does JPL have this RFP website? Are they saying they can't fix Sky Crane in-house? Is Lockheed-Martin quietly telling them that Sky Crane is dynamically uncontrollable so JPL is looking for a "better answer"? Is this purely political, e.g. We (JPL) provided a venue for you critics to respond to Sky Crane so now stop your bitching?
Here's a big clue about Sky Crane: There were significant dynamic instabilities revealed by MER's inertial measurement unit at around Mach 6 and NO ONE knows why! This was a vanilla 70 deg. spherecone descending at Mach 6 with the parachute not yet deployed.
If MSL goes to Mars with Sky Crane, it will auger-in.

It's hard to take MSL seriously when it uses Sky Crane

- They better get MSL right, or else the Greens are going to scream bloody murder over a nuke powered craft crashing into another planet. (n/t)
