The instability started around the same time after entry for both vehicles. The total angle-of-attack slowly grew in amplitude to about 6 deg. , cycling every 2 seconds. MER was spin stabilized with a zero degree trim angle-of-attack so this instability was precession driven. MER should have been rock stable at the Mach number where the instability first appeared.
