A lot of people seem to prefer their news and opinions predigested with no effort or thought required. They're content to lap up whatever the Press tells them.
Tell me, how hard was it to find the actual text of the news conference? It took what, maybe a minute or two of effort? As you pointed out, it paints a rather (no pun intended) different view of what Rumsfeld said.
