"For comparison, some 700 bicyclists were killed in traffic accidents in the U.S. in 2002, according to the National Safety Council, which if that rate were continued for 20.5 months rather than 12, would total some 1,196 fatalities. "

Here there some other stats:
"The Problem ...
Overall Unintentional Injury Deaths: 2002

Number of deaths: 99,500.
The highest death total was 116,385 in 1969 and the lowest recent death total was 86,777 in 1992 (lowest since 1924).
Unintentional injury deaths were up 2% in 2002 compared to 2001
A fatal injury occurs every 5 minutes and a disabling injury occurs every 1.5 seconds.
Wage losses, medical expenses, property damage, employer costs, fire losses and other expenses related to fatal and nonfatal unintentional injuries cost Americans an estimated $586.3 billion in 2002. That's equal to about 57 cents of every dollar spent on food in the United States. "

So if you are concerned about the chance of people dying, do your part: don't ride bicycles- it's probably just as dangerous then being a soldier in Iraq and it is certainly unnecessary. Walking and other forms of safer excercise can be done. Cars are safer and using Airlines are better than cars if traveling long distances.
