It's a lot more comfortable to believe that, I suppose. The alternative isn't so nice to contemplate.

Their tactics are despicable, to be sure. But they are faced with an overwhelmingly more powerful enemy.

And I'm also sure that some of the people fighting ARE mercenaries and disgruntled Baathists.

However, I think that, if "bands of German SS officers had been blowing up things and attacking..." then the German populace would have either turned against them or turned them in. Got any examples of that happening in Iraq?
