About twenty years ago, NASA researchers did this study called the "Mars Box". The idea was to create an environment that matched the Martian surface and then see what could survive there. According to a phone conversation I had with Lynn Margulis, NASA discovered the Mars Box to be the "perfect sterlizing environment" (wrong answer!). I haven't been able to find any publications concerning the Mars Box and suspect there aren't any.
