We have known the so called Dutroux affair.
Marc Dutroux is responsible for the death of 4 young girls who had been reported missing for months (or years) before finally he was caught.
It has shocked Belgium and neighbouring countries very deeply.
What has happened?
Well, the public, the families demanded for a general commission to investigate what went wrong. With the police, the justice, the governement. Many things changed, ministers resigned, the justice system was listening to the victims more than before.
And Dutroux, his wife and an accomplice were
tried. Dutroux got the maximum.
This meant he was defended by lawyers who certainly showed what led to the events, his childhood, his character.
The point is NOT to compare him to the devil, but to establish his responsabilities and to enable the 2 survivors (2 girls were found alive and freed) to come to a closure, to leave it all behind. Sabine Dardenne confronted him at the audience and it made her feel much better, afterwards. The families of the victims too, have to be able to mourn their lost children and bring the case to an end.
It's no use demonizing Dutroux. It happened and many things need to be done to prevent this from happening again. One thing was the creation of Child Focus.
