Of Mice and Lice (not to be confused with Steinbeck's Of Lice and Len)

Tom has a point - plows happen.

To a Mouse
and
To a Louse

...but I'm not sure what that has to do with free will.

Tom said "If this kind of thinking was true, everyone raised in a ghetto, beaten by their father, would grow up to be a criminal. Nobody raised in a normal family, free of tragedy and serious pain, would end up a criminal."
but these two points are not complementary, and I don't agree with what Tom is implying in the second part (that some people just go bad for no apparent reason, is what I think he's trying to say).

That someone raised in horrific circumstances can become a decent person says that some people can make good choices even if they have had misfortune along the way - somehow they have learned how and why to make these good decisions. Something in their experience has shown them that good decisions will make thier life better.

I don't believe that, given a safe and loving home, a childhood and adolescence free of drugs and violence, a training in self control and ethics, and both an experience of and a mentoring in human rights, anyone will make seriously wrong decisions and become a criminal (assuming they don't suffer from a mental illness).

But that's just me.

And all this is not to say that individuals shouldn't take responsibility for their bad decisions. However, society has to take some responsibility, too, and make every effort to prevent such things from happening in the future, as Raoul pointed out.
