Well - it's a bit better than the raw JPGs at JPL would have us believe as they stretch the images using a fairly unintelligent algorythm

However - go take a picture with any camera of a nice landscape - and put a mass of kitchen foil in the middle of it - and you'd get the same sort of thing :)
