Motivation
Many of the incidents described in lurid detail in the media had already been under official investigation for months before the stories appeared.
In my opinion, the motivation for a lot of these stories is less to make sure justice is done, and more to rip the military and the administration a new one. This was especially true prior to the election.
This would also explain why they used the faces of the SEALS. It hits harder.
