I can relate. One of my aunts and an uncle are fighting cancer, and it looks like my aunt is losing. My step grandmother died of heart failure a year ago.
When a doctor gives a prediction of life expectancy, as often as not it is wrong. One uncle of mine was given less than a year to live due to congestive heart failure. He lived for over 5 years, long enough to see his only daughter get married and become a mother. Doctors can be wonderful, but they aren't always right. So long as your father isn't suffering, perhaps the same will be true for him. If not, may he go peacefully.
Take care of yourself, Mary Anne. Losing a parent is a very trying time. I lost my father when I was 17, so I can relate. Even when you think you have time to prepare, it still seems to come as a terrible surprise.
