Science isn't about proof. That's your first mistake.

Appeal to authority is your second mistake :

Where was I? Oh, we are trying to demonstrate that Mars had life, remember? So, we have to make a hypothesis, that since Earth has life, Mars is near enough Earth for panspermia, both Mars and Earth had and have huge volumes of water, and both are roughly 4.5 billion years old, the hypothesis that Mars could have life is surely valid. Therefore, we can either falsify it or verify it, geology has little to do with the fundamental premise.
Now, since we are suddenly into an area demonstrated to have been exposed to water and high in phosphorus, and suddenly we are seeing stuctural anomalies in the rocks, not just little holes, but large glaring structural anomalies, doesn't it make a little sense to start investigating them aggressively, since the primary geology mission - follow the water - is over.
We found the water. Now we need to look for fossils.
Go ahead, filter my IP, I know how reality is so shocking to you faith based neocon baseball lovers.
