Space/Science » in reply to Galileo's atmospheric probe had no camera

People still bitch about this

People (including me) are still bitching about the Galileo Probe not having a camera. The image of clouds stretching out to the near infinity of Jupiter's horizon would have been an amazing sight. However there were bandwidth issues. The probe was pumping data up to the Galileo orbiter about as fast as it could given the 1970s technology used. Remember, the Galileo orbiter stored data on a reel-to-reel tape recorder (it was that primitive). That damned tape recorder was always giving JPL grief. Now it's just a wisp of metallic vapor circulating in Jupiter's atmosphere.
