Greek mythology is a great character story. It was inspired by previous civilizations like the Egyptian or the Sumerian. It's about characters who beam human traits, qualities and shortcomings.
The great thing about this is those gods were not universal, were not perfect (far from it), were not "love".
It has in turn inspired later civilizations and especially people who turned artists like sculptors, painters, writers, musicians and who perpetrated the stories until the present days.
This is what matters: it started a very long time ago and survived the test of time (I'm certain present day comic books won't fare that well).
