If it were just a case of endangering yourself then fine - no law should be made requiring you to buckle up... but it isnt just that, as SteveS pointed out by not wearing a seatbelt you can end up making things far worse for others on the road- at that point it stops being a personal choice, it becomes a public safety issue...
On a similar note, I am against laws requiring motorcyclists to wear helmets (Not that I would EVER ride without a helmet! I once wiped out on a slick road and had my head pressed against the road and the curb as I slid a few yards- I came out of that with a scraped helmet and bike but not a bruise or a scrape otherwise...) I believe that if you truly feel that a real man doesnt wear a helmet, then fine- be a real man... Most likely you will become a positive contribution to society when you become an organ donor...
I am also for the legalization of drugs...
Now the rules when it comes to kids is much more problematic, A kid riding a bike on a street should have a helmet (I never did but there was not much traffic on the country roads in Oklahoma)...
I believe in personal liberty very strongly, but it has to be tempered with reason... For instance when some dope starts telling me how Nostradamus predicted that Iraq would become a quagmire- I cannot spit in their face, kick them in the genitalia, and pull out their tounge and strangle them with it, (although I think we both agree that this is the only appropriate response)...
Instead, I have to just grit my teeth and pretend I didnt hear it and calm myself with peaceful visualization of the offender being subjected to various methods of midevil torture... You see, Tom- such are the sacrifices we must live with in a civilized society...
