They can claim underdog status even when they have the advantage.
It's hard enough to be embattled martyrs when you hold all three branches of government. If the "liberal media" are suddenly demonstrated not to be as liberal as advertized, it might begin to occur to regular citizens that problems might not be caused by liberals. How can they be, if liberals are not as influential as conservatives say?
