Being the side you choose

The last paragraph of the article:

We'll be watching you guys closely in the next few days. Give the Iraqi people your support; it's not about George W. Bush and the 'neocons' anymore - it's about freedom vs. terrorism.

"We'll be watching you guys closely in the next few days."
Thanks for the veiled threat. You're gathering ammunition for the next attack, no doubt. Wouldn't it be more appropriate to be monitoring Iraq, if that's really the important thing? But no, it isn't. The important thing is to make sure that liberals and their heinous ideas are kept out of public life except as a point of ridicule. So the point is, keep an eye on the real enemy: your fellow citizens who don't agree with you. So we better agree with you -- we better quit being who we are. No chance, but I appreciate the warning.

"Give the Iraqi people your support;"
We are. We would like them to be able to select their own form of government, including their own candidates, their own governmental structure, and so forth. Also, security would have been nice, but it's too late for that. Unless you listen to Condoleezza Rice, who apparently has more fingers on her hand to count with than the rest of us.

"it's not about George W. Bush and the 'neocons' anymore -"
Oh, you wish. Who's in charge of this show?

Nope, I'm still interested in holding our own elected officials responsible for their actions. I wish the Iraqis luck, but I'm not willing to suspend judgment of my own government's actions while the Iraqis attempt to break into democratic self-rule. It would be a bad example to set for them.

"it's about freedom vs. terrorism."
Freedom? Does that have anything to do with the rule of law? Terrorism? Does that have anything to do with torture?

Freedom is about doing what you think is right, not about doing what other people tell you is right, especially when those people are not telling the truth. Opposing terrorism is not a menu-specific thing: Terror as practiced by our people and by our friends is no better than terror practiced by our enemies. In fact, it may be worse, not because there's more of it (there isn't) or because it's used as a public relations tool (as our enemies practice it), but because we represent ourselves to the world as the shining beacon of liberty. If we claim the high road for ourselves, we damn well better keep to it. All the time. No excuses.
