Perhaps they need to develop a low probability of intercept sonar

Some stealth aircraft like the F/A-22 and B-2 have radar systems. You'd think that turning on a radar would defeat stealth and normally, you'd be right. However, they've developed some really cool technology called "Low Probability of Intercept/Low Probability of Detection (LPI/LPD)" that allows the radar to work without being detected. The details are classified, of course, but the concept isn't too hard to understand.

Currently, going active on sonar is like screaming to the world, "HERE I AM!!!". Perhaps it'd be possible to develop some form of LPI/LPD with sonar. It'd probably have to operate in the high ultrasonic range, using frequency hopping and pulse compression. It'd send out a low powered directional pulse at one frequency then hop to another frequency for the next pulse. It might be possible to make such a system that would be hard to detect with passive sonar systems. Another possibility might involve some form of LIDAR using blue-green lasers.
