Keith Cowing: What's the hot gossip about NASA Ames?
Not enough civil servants at Ames took the buyout. Last week they laid off about 35 on-site contractors in Life Sciences. Rumor has it that about 150 civil servants will get RIFed at Ames in FY-06. Is Ames in its end game towards center closure? It looks like Ames is getting close to its critical mass for doing viable technical work. I can see a scenario where most of the buildings at Ames are empty. The few surviving civil servants will be making PowerPoint presentations to each other about proposals with no hope of funding. It'll be NASA's own version of a Cargo Cult.
