Mir had various configurations of modules and solar panels. They changed place according to newly added modules. They took full advantage of 3 dimension.
There's the ATV that can boost the ISS into higher orbit, keep it alive longer.
Solar panels could one day be replaced by solar furnaces (looking like antennas) and the ISS can be used as a testbed for them.
