Re-entry Physics...

Hi All

Probably a question for Gary, but anyone else too: is there any quick way of figuring out the peak temperature and acceleration of a re-entering space vehicle? Looking at old NASA Apollo mission docs shows that the Apollos had a really curious re-entry profile - they came in "steep" from 400,000 feet down to ~ 200,000 feet and then kind of flew in a couple of little skips at roughly that level until they were slow enough presumably.

The NASA docs say very little about the temperature and are vague on the peak gees [6.35 gee, but at what speed? altitude? etc...]

Google seems to be rather unhelpful on this one.
