I can't remember which TV show I saw it on, but either Lovell or Borman (I think) from Apollo 8 was retelling the conversation in the command module before re-entry with Anders (who had never experienced re-entry) about what the ride would be like and what to expect see outside the space craft, etc. Then re-entry happens and the two veterans are at first mildly surprised then eye-openly worried about how much more intense the fireball they're in the middle of is compared to that of their Gemini re-entries. While Borman and Lovell are exchanging wide-eyed looks, Anders is all grin and having the time of his life!
As Jay explains here, the "double dip" profile for the Apollo re-entries was to allow the heat shield time to cool down between hard braking.
Space/Science » in reply to 40 gees is no fun...
Foot note: Scared a couple astronauts, too...
