You can't believe how pissy the farmers around here get when you bring up this subject. They claim they couldn't make it without the subsidies because farm land prices are to high. You point out that farmland would be less expensive if there were no subsidies and they disagree...Apparently nobody understands farm economics accept farmers!
But the sad truth is that the subsidies are terrible economics...The bad farmers are being fed nurishment at the expense of the good. And even the good farmers are now afraid to admit reality: 10's of Thousands of farmers are now a subsidy check from bankrupsy because of such bad economic thinking that has been sold to them in the form of a free lunch...
As a result, corn is as cheap now as it was 25 years ago, while farmland, energy, and equipment prices are through the roof...making it harder than ever to breakeven... If you own farm ground there are 50 farmers fighting to rent that ground from you at ever increasing rent prices! The subsidy monster is completely out of control...
Of course I'm not suprised, are you?
I don't think this is where Bush will make his stand on the budget...Although eventually someone should, or they will be forced to.
