Taxing cars by the mile, using GPS systems to give the state your car's information.
The market is responding handily to tight oil supplies and high gas prices, so why not just have the government step in and screw it all up? This would be, of course, in addition to the regular gasoline tax, which is already a huge chunk of gas prices, including a sales tax on the excise tax.
A distributed system tying a GPS recording unit in your car to a statewide information net. Swell. Today, it's mileage. Tomorrow?
