re: High Tech vs Self-Absorbed Yuppie Scum

I'm not eager for the cell phone ban to be lifted on airliners. Even if the FCC removes the restriction*, airlines will be very conservative about allowing transmitters inside a plane that depends on several receivers for safe operation. It'll take a while before it's shown that cell phones don't interfere with avionics.

On the other hand, I'd like it if they removed the restriction for private planes. There are several times when that could come in handy, and as the pilot, I'd know when the phone is operating and could evaluate if there is any interference. The hardest part might be getting an adapter to tie in with my noise canceling headset, otherwise, I'd never be able to hear the phone over the airplane noise.

*From what I've read, the FCC ban on cell phone use in planes is because they're concerned that too many ground towers would be in the line of sight of a high altitude cell phone, possibly reducing the network capacity. Normally, a ground cell phone will be within range of 1 or a few towers. From the air, you might be within range of dozens. I've been told the fine for using a cell phone in flight is at least $10,000, but I can't find an online reference for that. There is a special cell phone network for aircraft use, but it requires special phones and is pretty expensive for general aviation use.
