Oh, Lord: another dead author falls victim to post-mortem publication...

What happened to Ted Geisel with the publication of Daisy-head Mayzie is about to happen to Shel Silverstein with Runny Babbit.

Here's hoping Silverstein's after-death event isn't as bad as Dr. Suess's. As it is, from the description, it looks like Runny Babbit uses the same device used with considerable, if vulgar, aplomb by Roald Dahl in The Vicar of Nibbleswicke.

Somebody found Daisy-head Mayzie in a trunk in Dr. Suess's attic, and trumpetted the publication of an unpublished masterpiece. Alas, only the adjective was true, something that Geisel himself doubtless knew, or why would he have put it in a trunk? Likewise, Silverstein, who could have published his correspondence with the electric company to ooo's and aaah's, chose not to publish this "found work". Sometimes authors don't publish things for the very good reason that they don't think the works are up to standard.

And then someone "finds" it. Why is art in the trashbasket considered money in the bank? Why can we not let rejected art rest in peace with its creator? [fume]

Well. We'll see. Maybe it's good. Somehow I doubt it, though. If it were, Shel himself would have seen it through.
