As I recall in the 2000 elections, candidates were asked about this.

A big question came about when the stock market went DOWN. It can.

"Will the Federal Government make up the losses?"

Hypothetical question was, "I believed the Republicans, I invested in the market, and lost it all and can't afford to retire and live - who's going to make this up??"

It seems obvious there will come a time when the balance of payments, the deficit, the energy squandering, and all the other irresponsible practices of the past and present administrations will rear their ugly heads in a way which can't be borrowed, stolen, or legislated away.

And then the US economy will slow down. Slow down a lot.

And the stock market will reflect that.

Social Security came about as a Democratic response to stock market problems. The Republican attempt to loot it by pouring more money in without creating more value is transparent and reprehensible. And trusting the Republicans to have the poorer people's interests at heart is beyond comprehension. Laughable.

So, we'll see.
