Heisenberg was the main man behind the Nazi nuclear weapons program. We have almost complete knowledge about Nazi nuclear technology based upon Heisenberg's accounts. Also the Germans tried to build a nuclear fission reactor using heavy water as a moderator. The remains of that unsuccessful effort can be seen at a museum near Tubingen. There is no mystery here. The Nazis were not close to building a nuclear weapon.
