As a non-Luddite myself I second your thinking. Sometime in the folllowing decades or century we will be able to create "non-natural" extremes of energy density in space-time. These experiments are fine but are best done in free space or at worst on the moon or preferably an NEO. That way any "error" in our theory (of which there have been legion) will not extinguish us.
For those of you who like sci-fi, physicist John Cramer's "Einstein's Bridge" explores a related theme. It postulates the SCSC actually got built and opened a door which we did not want to open with unpleasant consequences. The story goes on from there in an interesting manner where the protagonists attempt to undo the past and politically defeat the SCSC.
