I like to think I am up to date on the cutting edge of technology- but several times I have been surprised by devices that make star trek technology look like childs play. Every few months I read about a criminal caught because some one caught them in the act by taking a picture of them on their portable phone. I once gave a talk and had someone ask for a copy of my presentation- the file was over 30 megabytes. I offered to email it but he said "Oh you dont need to do that, I have this!" He held up a key chain and added "I think I have 200 megabytes free!"
So I gave him 30 Meg of data on his key chain.. It took all of 15 seconds.
When I was 14 my family was at the cutting edge of technology- We had a kickass 800 baud modem, and all you had to do was put the phone on its cradle to access the local bulletin board! Is that cool, or what?!
I was a student during the blossoming of the internet... I remember spending hours in the library to find info that takes a few seconds now. I remember the POWER the internet gave me... I have used the internet to make a few discoveries that I could NEVER have made if I was forced to go through a library. If someone like me can discover new things with this new freedom, imagine what a world can do with this access to information.
First there was the printing press- It led to an intellectual revolution... The internet is a similar exponential leap- a scientist in Kansas can brain storm with a scientist in India- they can both talk to a scientist in the Ukraine- I believe the internet will, in our future history books, be viewed as a catalyst for change.
The pace of change will only increase. However long I live, I am certain that the world I will die in will be very alien to me...
I had a grandfather that saw the first car drive into town, and man walk on the moon....why should I expect anything less?
There is a wild ride ahead....
