Thats thru the L2 filter - the near IR.

All the outcropped rock - from Eagle Crater, Anatolia, Fram, Endurance, and beyond - have shown up that sort of colour.

However - remember - the images dont arrive in the Exploratorium in the order they were taken. All those small images you talk about ( 256 x 256 i.e. 4 x 4 binned images ) are from around Sol 400 when they took a mosaic of Vostok Crater.

- is about where we are ow - looking south toward Viking and Voyager crater, 1km south of Vostok.
