A "political issue" has other consequences besides economic ones, and there are axes of wealth and power to grind on both sides.
Some people are either incapable of perceiving this, or unwilling to, and without that, real discussion is pointless.
You saw the "response" on an earlier thread when I pointed out that billions of dollars, entire industries, academic careers, scientific grants, and many other things now depend on AGW as currently sold.
Nobody wants to take the next step to discussing "what to do about it" because everyone knows damn well what the implied next steps are and who benefits. The leaders of the movement have made no secret of it.
As just one of multiple examples, James Hansen wants a worldwide tax on CO2 emissions. Levied by who? And what kind of near-limitless power would be needed to invoke this? Shhh. Don't ask inconvenient questions. But hey, only the oil companies are talking about money, right?
By the way, it's not a "conspiracy" if a group like the media has near-monolithic political ideas, any more than it's a "conspiracy" that all Baptists have similar beliefs. It's just a fact.
