My arguments are based on satellite data, which I know something about, and are less vulnerable to interpretive skewing.
I have formal training in astronomy, but I consider myself unqualified to peer-review studies in my own field. Outside astronomy, I have no choice but to rely on consensus from the specialists in the field. And you know what that consensus is.
As for your "fair and balanced" equivalency between the scientific and commercial communities, that is paranoid nonsense springing from ideological fanaticism. Period.
Although I do agree that governments are perfectly capable of lying through their teeth for a power or money advantage, they are also quite inept at it. States are ponderous and decentralized bureaucracies, they rarely are capable of pulling off the kind of subtle skulldugerry you suggest here, unless they can hide behind patriotic fervor and national security laws. I find it interesting, that unlike yellowcake, aluminum tubes and WMDs, this statist plot to loot your goods only seems obvious to those of your ideological persuasion.
