Space/Science » in reply to Teleoperation for Mars Exploration--there is a way

I have heard reference to that idea - no idea where, though.

Typically, the humans reside on Phobos or Diemos for the duration of the mission.

A few things I don't like about the approach:

1) By the time we got ready to perform such a mission, robotics and AI would be so good that they may not need teleoperation.

2) The humans would not receive the benefit of Mars' resources - notably the volatiles. Everything would have to be lugged from earth.

3) You go all that way, and for all that time, and you don't even get to walk around on Mars! Further, there's not even a sample-return inherrent in the mission.
