This is not a completely relavent example for some technical reasons, but it illustrates the advancement in laser efficiency in the past decade or so...
The laser I currently work on was built with early to mid- 90's technology, it would fit into a semi truck trailer, It consumes 50kW of electrical power and has a final output under 20 Watts.
I just saw a laser built recently to do the same thing as my laser- It could fit in the bed of a large pickup truck, and consumes less than 5 kW...
The efficiency of lasers is progressing rapidly...
I dont think this will be used for a home fridge but it has lots of technical applications...
