Off Topic » in reply to How to solve difficult problems... Lessons learned... (damn this is a rambling post, but I think it makes a few important points)

it's been said by everyone, but I agree...

Every report I write, every project I do, I collect the information and then I procrastinate for a week, or so.

Sometimes it takes 2 or 3 weeks.

When my brain is ready, I sit down and the report is there, in full, carefully ordered and structured, and I basically take dictation from my own brain. It knows what to do. I know not to interfere with how it does it. The report is 95% complete and I just roll it out, then proof-read and add a few touches. It earns me a nice income from my clients because they get what they want, and few other people (ahem, cough) can supply the same quality in that short a time.

Sometimes we have a few hiccoughs because it isn't ready and the deadline is close. The secret is not to panic. Usually I meet the deadlne. Sometimes I don't. But I sure as heck couldn't do a decent job on the few I miss inside the deadline if I forced the result - that way lies screw-ville!

I haven't burned a client yet. They are all happy, and they come back for more.

Just wish I could teach this skill to some of the juniors in the office - but if they slack off, they goof off!
