Background brain ops
Stephen King describes a similar phenomenon regarding his writing - he will conceive a plot and some characters, then "forget" about them for a while as he works on other projects or does other things. Some time later, when he sits down to write, the story has been largely formulated in the background of his brain and all he has to do is put it down on paper.
