If Leiberman had been the candidate, I would bet a month's pay he would have won.
But the election wasn't about policy, it was about raw hatred of Bush.
Most Republicans are live and let live on religion, and some of what you're seeing is playing to a small base, much as Democrats do when pandering to minorities, unions, and others. When the rubber meets the road, I expect moderation will win out. It often does.
