"Well Tom - support maybe - but support from only 36.3% of the population. 63.7% of the nation voted against Blair. Nearly 2/3rds. Not only that, but the Labour majority is considerably reduced from the last election. The message is VERY clear from this country regarding the war - and it is NOT the message you are pretending it is. Stop trying to pretend - as you know you are trying to - that a 36.3% vote is 'support' or a 'mandate' for the war. It is not."
Why can't you count the conservatives as for the war? If the conservative party was elected they certainly won't have changed the Brits offical stance. Whereas the party against the war [other than Labour] was the Liberal Dems. If the LDs had got elected to would have probably bailed from Iraq. So LD pick up some votes but since they were the only anti-war vote they didn't do that well.
The real loser was the conservatives, they could be seen as flipped flop on the war [pretty damn stupid for the conservative to do], saying they supported it, but whining about "how" it was done. Christ, they ran the campaign similar to Kerry, in other words they positioned themselves very badly (and they didn't even have Kerry's "excuse" [keeping to left to get the primaries- if it wasn't for that factor Kerry wouldn't so stupid to put himself at such as disadvantage] and then conservative run a campaign of calling Blair a liar without any real position other just attack- childish, even dumber the the American Dems.
