Rice, like Powell, is pro-choice (though not militantly so), and in general is pretty moderate on social issues. She would never win the GOP primaries, and absolutely would never have a chance in hell of being drafted by the convention.

Have you read the 2000 or 2004 GOP platforms? Those provide a reasonable sense of where the mass of delegate views lie, and it is rather militantly anti-abortion. The 2004 version calls for a constitutional amendment to outlaw abortion, including no exceptions for rape, incest or to save the life of the mother, as well as calling for an abortion litmus test on judicial appointees.

As Tom and others will no doubt point out that level of militancy does not reflect the average Republican voter, or even the way most GOP politicians actually govern. But it does refelect something about the candidate selection process, where party activists like those delegates do play an important role. A pro-choicer is a non starter
