Aren't Mars Global Surveyor, Mars Odyssey and Mars Express in a Mars polar orbit?
Which explains why it was possible to image the probes.
I don't think the Viking orbiters, Mariner 9, Phobos (Russian spacecrafts) are in a similar orbit, though.
