I have found it extremely instructive to note when a newspaper prints a photo that might have a specific effect on someone, and when it doesn't. Goes at least as far back as the 9/11 photos of people jumping from the buildings.
The newspapers seem to make specific decisions along the lines of "this photo will have an effect we don't want to see, while this other photo will have an effect we do want." Tally up the decisions, and you get a pretty good idea where the newspaper is coming from.
