I have seen how the rich treat the poor on a local scale
They either treat them like serfs to work on all the land and businesses they own as if they were land barons of the Middle Ages, or they ignore them outright and let them wallow and rot in their own poverty and ignorance.
The rich take care of only one thing - themselves. That's how they got rich and powerful to begin with. Helping them is just feeding the dragon and hoping he either won't eat you or drop the table scraps your way.
