I've always been partial to the Star Trek transporter, myself
The way it would seem to function in Trek is almost ideal...you are actually still made from the same material when you wind up at your destination, so there're no duplicates to deal with (as in Think Like a Dinosaur). Of course, on the rare ocassion when things go wrong, you end up as a plateful of corned beef hash. Or a fly.
But as Geordi commented at least once, "It really is the safest way to travel..."
